N&V: Josh Riley votes with MAGA to crush free speech

NEWS & VIEWS

September 11, 2026

Rep. Josh Riley (D-NY) sided with 203 Republicans last week to punish colleges for exercising free speech.
On September 3, H.R. 4795 passed the House 237-169. If it becomes law, it would strip Pell Grants and federal student loans from any college or university that engages in a boycott of Israel — even a nonviolent, expressive political stance rooted in a decades-long American tradition of boycotts, from the Boston Tea Party to the civil rights movement.

Riley was one of only 33 House Democrats who broke ranks to support this bill — while his own party’s leadership, including Hakeem Jeffries and Nancy Pelosi, voted no.

Constituents deserve to know: their representative voted to hold students’ financial aid hostage over how their school engages politically.

This vote by Rep. Riley calls for intensified scrutiny and pressure on his voting record by all people of conscience.

Cornell Student Activists Launch New Campaign: “Students Not Bombs”

Approximately 120 students gathered on Ho Plaza to demand Cornell divest from Israel on Wednesday evening, 9/2, as part of the “Students Not Bombs” campaign. “Students Not Bombs” is a joint campaign by Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace and Young Democratic Socialists of America dedicated to “end[ing] Cornell’s complicity in the genocide in Palestine,” according to a social media post made by SJP.

The campaign includes seven demands: divesting from weapons manufacturers, severing ties with Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, discontinuing Cornell Career Services events “with institutions underpinning genocide and mass deportations,” establishing an “independent ethical research review board,” “pay[ing] its fair share towards Ithaca,” redirecting internal investments to prioritise affordability and investing in academic opportunities, according to SJP’s post.

“Our demands are clear. Our movement is growing, and we are not going anywhere,” said Yasmeen Masoud ’28, SJP president and Student Assembly vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion, at the rally. “We eagerly await [the University’s] response.”

This rally follows a campaign launch on Aug. 24 that drew around 40 demonstrators.

NEW TRIAL DATE FOR PORT ELIZABETH 4

The Port Elizabeth 4 have been given a new trial date for the third time: Monday, September 14th, 9 am, at 1 Police Plaza, Elizabeth, (https://www.google.com/maps/search/1+Police+Plaza,+Elizabeth,+New+Jersey?entry=gmail&source=g) New Jersey (https://www.google.com/maps/search/1+Police+Plaza,+Elizabeth,+New+Jersey?entry=gmail&source=g) . The trial had been scheduled two previous times and postponed with very short notice.

Before dawn, on
October 3, 2025, the four arrestees were part of an autonomous coalition of 100 protestors who stopped truck traffic
delivering 1,000 tons of military weapons to the Port of Elizabeth, bound
that week for Israel on the Maersk Sentosa vessel. The defendants plan to represent themselves and use defenses of necessity, with appeal to US and international law.

The 4 activists, Teresa Grady, Danny Creamer, Ellen Grady and Mark
Scibilia-Carver, all from Ithaca, are charged with three disorderly persons’ offenses for participating in the action.

September 5 > Haaretz Investigation, based on IDF soldiers’ testimonies, sources in Gaza and satellite imagery, reveals how Israel is cultivating a network of armed militias in Gaza. The IDF and Shin Bet extend their patronage to the militias to support their opposition to Hamas.

By blending detailed research with firsthand experiences, this book is equal parts compelling and informative—the perfect educational resource for all ages. From the Balfour Declaration to Israel’s siege of the Gaza strip, Khalidi delivers a thorough portrait of the intricacies of the geopolitical conflict occurring in the middle east while keeping the text broadly accessible.

Add this new volume to your bookshelf next to Khalidi’s in-depth study,
The Hundred Years War on Palestine.

Quote of the Week

“A question more urgent, and more fundamental, than that concerning how ethnonationalist societies can prevent the commission of genocide in their name is the question of how the entire world can be made to understand that the nation-state, as a “sovereign” defender of national or ethnonational “identities”, is no longer viable or defensible on a tiny planet subjected to the rapid destruction of the very conditions of survival of human life through the dual forces of nationalism and capitalism—a militarised capitalism that exploits identity politics in all its forms. To understand the urgency of this latter question, the book States Without Nations: Citizenship for Mortals, by Jacqueline Stevens (Columbia Univ. Press, 2009) provides a powerful analysis.”

Reader comment in Ha’aretz last week.

N&V: Liturgy of Grief, Acts of Protest

NEWS & VIEWS

August 28, 2026

Shroud of Remembrance &
Solidarity with the Children
of Gaza

More than 20,000 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza by the Israeli military since 2023. An abstract number cannot express the magnitude of this atrocity. Each murdered child, uniquely beloved, has a name. As a way to connect our hearts and share our grief for those who have been destroyed, Priests Against Genocide and Doctors Against Genocide have initiated a nation-wide action by local communities to inscribe 20,000 names onto canvas fabric. A Shroud of Remembrance will be pieced together to display in late September in Washington, D.C. More than half of the names have been inscribed to date.

On August 18, Ithacans gathered at an interfaith service of prayer and remembrance, designed by Catholic Worker volunteers, in DeWitt Park on a beautiful summer evening. The sound of harp and song expressed the grief of the gathering. Pastors of the Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist Churches prayed for the children, their families and our complicity. The Shofar was sounded and a prayer, written by Rabbi Brant Rosen of Tzedek Chicago, called for true repentance in this Season of Elul. Passages from the Qur’an were shared by a Muslim physician, calling for a STOP to the violence and genocide. We heard the horrifying words of 5-year-old Hind Rajab, transcribed from audio recordings released by the Palestine Red Crescent Society, begging for someone to come get her from the car where she was killed with family members … a car riddled with 335 I.D.F. bullets.

150 names were inscribed by those who processed to receive a strip of paper with a name to inscribe.

NEW TRIAL DATE SET FOR PORT ELIZABETH 4

Port Elizabeth 4 Trial is set to begin on Monday, September 14, with Press Conference at 8:30 am. Trial scheduled for 9 am. 1 Police Plaza, Elizabeth (https://www.google.com/maps/search/1+Police+Plaza,+Elizabeth?entry=gmail&source=g) Municipal Court, New Jersey. On October 3, 2025, the four defendants were part of an autonomous coalition of 100 protestors who stopped truck traffic delivering1,000 tons of military weapons to the Port of Elizabeth bound that week for Israel on the Maersk Sentosa vessel. The defendants plan to represent themselves and use defenses of necessity, along with US and international law.

The activists, Teresa Grady, Danny Creamer, Ellen Grady and Mark Scibilia-Carver, are charged with three disorderly persons’ offenses. On the day of the action, the activists released a statement: “This site [Port Elizabeth] exports weapons used by Israel to kill Palestinians in Gaza, delivered by Maersk and ZIM trucks. In addition, the port is one of the largest weapons exporters on the East Coast.”
Supplying these weapons for Israel’s genocide is a blatant violation of the U.S. War Crimes Act, the Leahy Law, the Foreign Assistance Act, the Arms Export Control Act, and the Genocide Convention Implementation Act. To uphold these laws and prevent unlawful weapons shipments, the Port Elizabeth 4 and other protestors peacefully came to uphold all U.S. and international laws about withholding weapons from being delivered to Israel’s genocide.

TAKE ACTION! SIGN THIS PETITION:

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) measure calls for the U.S. and Israel to co-produce weapons, coordinate AI tech for war, and meld together into a single military-industrial complex. According to a new Demand Progress poll, 61% of voters OPPOSE this policy. Congress must listen to the people and remove this measure from the NDAA.

Sign the petition: Block legislation that would fully integrate the U.S. and Israeli militaries! (https://act.demandprogress.org/sign/israel-military-ndaa-gvir/?t=6&akid=35544%2E3525179%2EcWd5U_)

Do you know about THE SAMEER PROJECT (https://thesameerproject.org/) ?
Liberation Through Mutual Aid.

Founded in April 2024 by Palestinians in exile, the initiative works with the most disenfranchised communities in Gaza, listening to what they need and delivering aid that fuels liberation.

An ICJP activist writes:
“The Sameer Project does wonderful work in Gaza. On Aug 10 they had to pause operations due to lack of funds and put out calls for help. As of yesterday, they had raised 18% of needed funding and need to reach 25% before they can begin to gradually reopen programs. They are strongly encouraging folks to make a monthly contribution, which I just set up. Perhaps others in our community might wish do do likewise.”

Friends of Sabeel N.A. Issue Call to Action:

Sabeel/FOSNA has sent over 450 individuals to Jerusalem in the last three years, and now our latest group was denied entry! While this restriction is a tiny fraction of what Palestinians face every day under apartheid, “Come & See” has been one of the most consistent and effective calls made by our Palestinian friends, colleagues, and family to the global community. Help seek an investigation, accountability, and review of Israel’s treatment of U.S. citizens at the border.

Brook Farm Institute is offering an on-line seminar:

THINKING PALESTINE

This seminar will explore the ideological origins of the Palestine-Israel conflict. How did the obscure nineteenth century movement known as Zionism grow from a utopian obsession to a powerful nation-state presiding over the longest military occupation in modern history? How did Zionism and Palestinian nationalism co-evolve against the dramatic backdrop of two world wars, the fall of empires, and the efflorescence of American global power? How can we interpret the development of the Palestinian liberation movement alongside the history of earlier anti-colonial independence movements? How did a state founded as a refuge from genocide come to be charged today with committing one?

“There is no better example [of the language of denial] than the appalling phrase ‘encouraging voluntary migration.’ The state that destroyed most of the homes in the Gaza Strip, cut off supplies of food, water, electricity and medicine, prevented reconstruction and repeatedly displaced a million people has established a dedicated bureau within the Defense Ministry to encourage migration (https://rc75picab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001bNkRUaH4BJajPsefjw7cXVzQHpmpve86YDOcF19Z2uT7WCoCCAFbXa0pzvH3HL0AQa2T6hWa82S5gPNOumfGJE3S-6VVVv8TJTNkWm3h5INWkV-s6fN2xrxPbGNBdF_lF33Lm0ky8nB1tLHOY0sLYRJmtlkLGIdJ7m-xcmmGqDGWwuYUsnob7QRyGhGwvu-_vSCZL3EVbsP5CsUfy2ghwY70sYc5fLNnjh77yTPXkds2zm0XlPOt7PYCcUlWYsCmZlzc9ZrVIrLvYHz694lq-QSWJMUkQefuZsWFxmck66nSTaOI-9yUuArG787MclHRRh4sxS4X7OQwWlKsG_P1ttOi8bIhBfxZl1K4FK6TSX4yzWxh5NT1D8EnQrvqGu-Z&c=Y9CQu9mfhzhxg473Tsa_Vvkfs2mJqOnOjq_F06fkUqHx-IlX_F5prA==&ch=C-CAekPP2x_xkKXt9FJ2wTq-LzCk3CCMTPHphuOO8_iOot1YwmDC2g==) . It offers ‘infrastructure that allows passage by land, sea and
air’ and announces that a significant proportion of residents are indeed ‘interested’ in emigrating. This is a dialectical euphemism. Instead of concealing the expulsion, it turns it on its head. The criminal becomes a service provider, the expelled person becomes a client, and ethnic cleansing becomes the work of a government bureau with a name and a budget. The word ‘voluntary’ assumes the existence of free will. But that will, if it exists at all, is itself a product of devastation and destruction. First, conditions are created in which life becomes impossible. Then fleeing those conditions is presented as a choice. ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY IN ITHACA

Shroud of Remembrance and Solidarity with the Children of Gaza

More than 19,000 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza due to military conflict since 2023. An interfaith service to commemorate their deaths will be held on Tuesday August 18 at 6:30pm in DeWitt Park (corner of Cayuga and Buffalo Streets) in downtown Ithaca.

At the service, attendees will be invited to inscribe some of the names of these children onto a large fabric. This initiative was begun by Priests Against Genocide and Doctor Against Genocide and now many more groups are joining this effort. In Ithaca, St. John’s Episcopal Church has taken responsibility for 150 names. The sponsors of this national initiative hope to display the Shroud of Remembrance in late September in Washington, DC. They are already more than half-way through writing the names. Writing their names is a way to reconnect our hearts with the truth that each one of those little ones has a name and was a uniquely beloved child of God – and not an abstract number.

Trapped and Cut Off — Palestinian families under settler siege in the West Bank (https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/13/middleeast/west-bank-settlers-siege-palestinians-qusra-intlhttp://)

On a recent Tuesday, Israeli settlers pitched a tent, cut off water and electricity lines and blocked roads, preventing anyone from reaching the hilltop homes in the West Bank village of Qusra.

Trapped inside with only enough food to last several days, Quasai Ridi and son said, “We will not surrender and we will not leave, even if we have to drink salt and water in this house and if there’s not a single piece of bread left.” Then, to Quasai’s disbelief, Israeli soldiers arrived, warmly greeted the settlers and then joined them in prayer.

More soldiers and border police arrived at the hilltop on Wednesday,
dismantled the settlers’ tent and began trying to remove them from the area. But dozens more settler/terrorists arrived, moving boulders into the road and throwing rocks at the security forces, who were seen firing sound grenades and spraying settlers with pepper spray before withdrawing.

Israeli human rights activists and journalists were trying to reach the hilltop, but were stopped on Thursday by two Israeli soldiers, flanked by a half-dozen settlers. “This is a closed military area,” one of the soldiers said. “You’re interfering with military activity.” During the day, a dozen Palestinian families were moved out and then back into their homes by a battalion of troops.

100 or so human rights activists marched to Qusra in solidarity, bringing extra food and water for the Palestinian families. Soldiers blocking their way but the supplies were eventually passed into the houses with help from Ofer Cassif, a left-wing Israeli member of Knesset..

The families remain besieged, unable to come and go without fear. The goal of the siege: drive out the Palestinians and sieze the property.

(https://mondoweiss.net/2026/08/understanding-israels-campaign-to-destroy-palestinian-refugee-camps-in-the-west-bank/) This Mondoweiss article addresses Israel’s vow to occupy and displace Palestinians in another West Bank refugee camp, as it did in Jenin and Tulkarem. A raid on the Qalandia refugee camp makes clear that the Israeli campaign isn’t only about ending Palestinian resistance but also what the camps represent.
A new book by Michael Sfard, prominent Israeli human rights lawyer, will be released next month by De Gruyter Brill: “Occupation from Within: How Israel’s Oppression of Palestinians Turned Inwards.” Sfard advances a stark argument: Israel’s long-standing domination of Palestinians—both under occupation and as citizens—has cultivated an ideology of Jewish supremacy that now turns inward to silence dissent and dismantle the state’s core democratic features. This ideology has enabled the spiraling cruelty of occupation, apartheid, and the war of annihilation in Gaza. Sfard sees Israel’s rapid descent into authoritariianism as a test case for understanding the global democratic recession.
A review by Steve France, posted on July 9 for the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, linked with permission of the editors.

“NEARLY EVERYONE WAS caught off guard when Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Yet there were some who were ready to act. Israel seized the moment to unleash genocide on Gaza. Francesca Albanese, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, immediately called out the genocide, one of just a handful of U.S. or U.N. officials to meet the moment, clear-eyed and clear-voiced.” Read it all HERE. Quote of the Week

“Mr Abu Azzoum and his (Gazan) colleagues live what journalism is meant to be. They have endured, day after month after year, in the most horrifying, unimaginable and unimagined circumstances, dedicated as truth tellers where no one else can venture.

Their bravery shines through everything: facing the grinding reality, seeing their equally brave colleagues murdered in horrible ways, bearing witness to criminal injustice, facing fear and boredom and dispair like everyone in Gaza and soldiering on, never allowing pain, grief or anger to show in their impeccably professional reporting.

The world is honored by the unconquerable spirit of the men and women journalists of Gaza – those alive and those who died – for their commitment to telling a story which will be told for generations to come.”

URGENT ACTION ALERT
FROM THE BDS MOVEMENT

Apartheid Israel’s military occupation forces have shielded Israeli settlers while they terrorized Palestinian communities, murdering, burning, and injuring hundreds. In a brazen display of impunity, Israel’s genocidal forces have launched massive collective punishment operations across the territory, committing more war crimes and enabling pogroms.

Following the Israeli settlers’ murder of four Palestinians defending their homes in Tell village near Nablus, the Israeli military imposed a suffocating lockdown and executed large-scale raids on the cities of Nablus and Jenin and surrounding villages. At least two Palestinian women were forced to give birth in vehicles at checkpoints, and one woman lost her unborn child due to road closures in Nablus. Dozens of Palestinians have been arrested and detained.

This is part of Israel’s deliberate policy of ongoing Nakba–the logical extension of the settler-colonial apartheid system that was established in 1948 and governs all of historic Palestine today. It is built on dispossession, ethnic cleansing, and denial of our refugees’ UN-stipulated and inherent right to return to their lands and receive reparations.

We call on you to join BDS groups and solidarity partners in your countries to (https://bdsmovement.net/news/Israeli-Fascist-Pogroms-Against-Palestinians-West-Bank) :
1. Shut It Down – Peacefully disrupt the institutions and corporations complicit in Israel’s genocide. Organize strikes (when feasible), walkouts, boycotts and sit-ins. No business as usual under genocide.
2. Expand Apartheid-Free Zones – Demand your university, workplace, union, city, or church cut ties with apartheid Israel and respect BDS guidelines.
3. Pressure Governments to Impose Lawful Sanctions on Israel – These accountability measures, which must include a comprehensive military embargo, are a legal obligation for all states following the ICJ decisions in 2024.
4. Build Broad-Tent Coalitions – Intersectional anti-racist coalitions for justice are needed now more than ever.
5. Amplify Palestinian Voices – Showcase Palestinian culture, popular resistance, and visions of liberation through film screenings, art exhibitions, teach-ins, and public discussions.

ICJP members and allied community & regional groups will recognize our local efforts over many years in this BDS Action List. Our call now, in the face of ethnic cleansing and genocide:

RENEW OUR COMMITMENT TO ACTION IN N.Y. SOUTHERN TIER!

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER — CHURCHES HEAR PALESTINIAN CRIES
FOR JUSTICE AND LIBERATION IN A TIME OF GENOCIDE

In a momentous step toward responsibility, the General Synod of the Church of England has voted to “hear” the cry of Palestinians in the Kairos II Document. Impetus for the positive vote began with the pastoral visitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, to Anglican congregations in Palestine/Israel in June.

Speaking at the Tent of Nations during her visit to the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, the Archbishop made this promise: ‘I will carry these encounters with me as I return home. I will use my role as Archbishop to seek the peace you desire and the freedom you deserve.”

With the subsequent support of the Archbishop and other church leaders, the General Synod agreed to address a diocesan-synod motion from Carlisle to engage with the Palestinian Christian document, Kairos Palestine II – A Moment of Truth: Faith in the Time of Genocide (https://www.kairospalestine.ps/images/Final_Kairos_document_II_English.pdf) . parishes for faithful study.

The Synod’s vote overcame strong appeals to reject the document from the U.K.’s Chief Rabbi, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, and the Board of Deputies of British Jews. Diab stated that the British government is implicated in the Middle East conflict and “compelled, as part of its historical role” to support the Palestinian people and help to end the Israeli occupation.

Fr. Diab also stated, “Since 7 October, the Church has not vocally and practically made really strong statements or actions to stop the subjugation and oppression and exploitation of the Palestinian community.” He urged the Church to pressure governments to hold Israel responsible to international law and liberation for Palestinians.

The Anglican Communion, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury as “first among equals,” is made up of independent national/regional churches living within an international structure of faithful mutual accountability and administrative decisionmaking. The Episcopal Church in the United States is a member of the Communion. The actions of the General Synod and the words of the Archbishop of Canterbury issue a challenge to the U.S. denomination to “hear” Palestinians and acknowledge genocide.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted 454-15 on June 30, 2026, to formally recognize Israel’s military action in Gaza as a genocide. Key actions of the Resolution:
* Genocide Recognition: Formally adopted a resolution declaring the military campaign in Gaza a violation of international laws prohibiting genocide.

* Divestment: Voted unanimously to divest church funds from Palantir Technologies and General Electric Aerospace over their technological and military ties to Israel.

* Boycotts and Embargoes: Urged active church members to boycott Israeli products tied to the conflict and called on the U.S. Congress to enact an arms embargo against Israel.

Quote of the Week

“Since 7 October 2023, US taxpayers paid over $20 billion in direct aid to the genocidal Israeli regime. The US government also took over $80 billion more tax money for its direct intervention in support of genocide in order to bomb countries in our region. Look at profits of companies like Northrop Grumman, Lockhead Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing, and Elbit Systems. While taxpayers foot the bill and the US now has some 40 trillion in debt, Israel and weapons manufacturers made out with hundreds of billions. In total the US spent over 9 trillion on wars on our people in Western Asia and North Africa not because it is good for the US public but because of the Zionist and corporate lobbies (and those are now intertwined more than ever).”
[A Comment from the Middle East perspective: Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh]

Runner Up

“In 4 days, Iran has managed to expand its scope of military domination in the region. Iran has destroyed the most precious, most expensive military bases, assets and equipment in the whole world. American bases in Bahrain and Kuwait and Qatar and Saudi Arabia are some of the biggest military installations in the entire world. These are assets that took trillions to build over the course of several decades. We’re talking a major chunk of military expenditure for over 30 years, going up in smoke.

We are seeing radars costing hundreds of millions of dollars a piece being destroyed in an instant. We are seeing entire military bases being abandoned and burned, decimated and destroyed. And I’m telling you from my knowledge, the US has never suffered such devastation in its entire history, except maybe Pearl Harbor but that was one attack.

No enemy in a normal war has done to the US military what the Iranians are doing to the US military right now. This defies belief. The military situation is so bad that censorship blocks practically every piece of new information about this war. If you’ve noticed we’re being exposed to less and less every day.”

for Palestinian hostages: https://www.ithacacjp.org/actions/

Abducted Palestinians are enduring unimaginable horrors in Israel’s torture chambers. Among them is Dr. Hassam Abu Safiya, a pediatrician and hospital director in Gaza who has been held hostage for 18 months. He was last heard pleading for his life, barely able to speak, covered in fresh bruises. The lawyer of Dr. Hassam Abu Safiya said his client has been severely abused while in captivity and is currently in critical condition. His report makes it clear that Dr. Hassam Abu Safiya will likely soon die in captivity, like many other innocent Palestinian abductees before him. As global pressure builds for his release, we must demand that Josh Riley act now to influence foreign policy and secure his release.

On May 22nd, 2026, Ithaca’s Katie Church, a long-time activist for Palestine liberation, helped to block the Zim (Israeli) and Maersk (German) shipping terminal lanes at the Port of Elizabeth, NJ., a direct action bockade which lasted four hours.

ZIM, an Israeli-run company, supports the genocidal states’ actions in Palestine. ZIM contracts with the Australian conglomerate Macquarie Asset Management, which leases Maher Terminal from Port Authority. The blockade directly targeted these actors, creating a miles-long backup of trucks. 91% of the weapons shipped out of the US that aren’t shipped through military bases are shipped from these terminals — weapons and supplies for the Israeli war machine.

Here is the address for KATIE’s account of the action, “Why I helped block the Port of Elizabeth for 4 Hours,” along with a Group Statement:

For the third year in a row, activists with Interfaith Action for Palestine (IAP) directly challenged the largest Christian Zionist organization in the country, Christians United for Israel (CUFI), in its signature massive gathering in Washington to lobby Congress to support Israel in its Gaza genocide and military assaults around the Middle East.

Activists representing Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and other faiths gathered in D.C. for training prior to CUFI’s June 7 ‘Lobby Day’ on Capital Hill. Journalist Steve France has written anaccount (https://epfpjn.org/interfaith-activists-ambush-christian-zionists-on-capitol-hill/) of the new tactics of IAP that took CUFI organizers by surprise.

Quote of the Week

In May, the UK’s largest public pension fund relented to pressure from campaigners to sell Israeli government bonds worth approximately $29.2 million. “We were horrified to discover that our retirement funds are financing genocide, apartheid, occupation, imprisonment, and torture,” one of the protest leaders told Middle East Eye.

…from The divestment drive that could shake Israel’s economic foundations (https://www.972mag.com/israel-bonds-divestment-debt-economy/?utm_source=972+Magazine+Newsletter&utm_campaign=e054a27e0a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_9_12_2022_11_20_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f1fe821d25-e054a27e0a-318901686) . To fund perpetual war, Israel has grown ever more reliant on issuing bonds. Relinquishing these holdings, often invested passively, disrupts that equation. Pension funds in the U.S. are divesting.

The Ithaca Committee for Justice in Palestine is launching a petition against Congressman Josh Riley to demand justice for Palestinian hostages.

To read more about this effort and sign the petition, please visit: IthacaCJP.org/actions
NOTE: the message to Josh Riley in CJP’s petition campaign demands action and vote in Congress to STOP THE GENOCIDE and FREE ALL PALESTINIAN HOSTAGES. Not PRISONERS… HOSTAGES.

To refresh your grasp of what it means to be a Palestinian hostage in the Israeli prison system, News & Views is posting once again the link to Nicholas Kristof’s horrifying expose in his New York Times article in May, The Silence that Meets the Rape of Palestinians. This comprehensive report (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/11/opinion/israel-palestinians-sexual-violence.html?unlocked_article_code=1.u1A.ZRYX._ATF4s4XrSIf&smid=em-share) charges Israeli soldiers, prison guards and “settlers” with brutal rapes and sexual abuse of male and female Palestinian prisoners. Kristof did first-hand reporting in Israel, and based his article “on conversations with 14 men and women who said they had been sexually assaulted.”

The U.N. Names Genocide of Children in Gaza

A landmark 94-page report, released on June 23 by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, states that the deliberate killing, maiming, and systematic destruction of life-supporting infrastructure for children serve as key indicators of genocidal intent to destroy the Palestinian people:

Mass Casualties: Children made up roughly 30% of all fatalities in Gaza
Deliberate Targeting: evidence shows Israeli forces intentionally shot children using high-precision weapons, snipers, and thermal-imaging quadcopter drones.

CAT Scan of Gunshot to the Head of a Gazan Child

Systemic Destruction: The military systematically dismantled access to life-sustaining care by attacking neonatal units, pediatric hospitals, schools, and orphanages.
Starvation and Abuse: The UN found that Israel used starvation as a weapon of war. It also documented instances of children being arbitrarily arrested, tortured, and subjected to sexual violence in detention facilities.
Post-Ceasefire Violations: The commission emphasized that the targeted killing of children has persisted at a rate of roughly one child per day even after the October 2025 ceasefire took effect.

A second Report by UN’s OCHA: “Expansion of areas under Israeli control in Gaza endangers civilians and relief efforts.” The UN and humanitarian NGOs demand: 1) end targeting of Palestinians for being in areas close to Israeli forces; 2) protection of civilians at all times and full compliance with international humanitarian and human rights law; 3) unimpeded humanitarian access into and across all parts of the Gaza Strip.

This OCHA Report coincides with the UN call on donors to fill a $100 million gap in funding for UNRWA. Last week, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said millions of Palestinians are at risk due to the shortfall, as well as Israel’s massive restrictions on UNRWA’s ability to work in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Quotes of the Week
Calls to commit genocide radiating from the Israeli Knesset:

Nissim Vaturi, a Deputy Speaker for the Likud Party, declared in 2025 that “the women and children must be put aside, and the adult men in Gaza eliminated.”

In Sept. 2025, Minister Gila Gamliel, Likud, announced: “We will turn the Gaza Strip into a place unfit for human habitation until the population leaves, and the same will happen in the West Bank.”

Likud MK, Moshe Sa’ada, spoke last year of “a watershed moment of decision, annihilation, and migration from Gaza.”

Tally Gotliv, a particularly provocative Likud lawmaker, has said of certain neighborhoods in Gaza that “everyone there is marked for death.”

Kinneret Barashi, Likud’s official appointee to the television and radio regulation council, posted on social media in 2025: “Every trace of the murderous mutations in Gaza must be erased, from the delivery rooms to the last elderly person in Gaza. One hundred percent marked for death in Gaza.”

N&V: Netanyahu’s Dangerous Twilight Days

NEWS & VIEWS

June 19, 2026

KEEPING OUR EYES WIDE OPEN TO SECTION 224
of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

As reported in the last edition of N&V, Congress is moving to intertwine the US and Israeli militaries, rather than just provide “support.” Section 224 of the FY2027 defense bill would fold Israeli weapons and technology straight into US military systems — giving the Zionist movement additional powers over the US military pipelines and strategies. Read the full breakdown (https://hello.goodshepherdcollective.org/l/E8F01qvpCw8UYWVZ6Hc82Q/uU9lAvYWMhgyyowdDIdxJw/KB74WGaHQeTtxc8927MEeoaQ) — the money, the confiscation orders, and what Section 224 actually does. In short:

LAYING THE GROUNDWORK: As the Trump administration advances planning with Israel, the House and Senate Armed Services Committees have both advanced the FY2027 NDAA, which contain provisions to systematically embed Israeli weapons makers in Pentagon procurement.
* The United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative would establish a non-Senate-confirmed Pentagon Executive Agent (EA) to synchronize and accelerate the embedding of Israeli weapons manufacturers into Pentagon contracting.
* This sets the stage for the co-development and co-production model described above by creating a framework that facilitates the funneling of US taxpayer money to Israeli weapons manufacturers.

Israel is CRUSHING the West Bank

Palestinian society survives, but in a state of grinding immiseration. Absent remedies, the result will likely be a loss of hope and a growing risk of instability and greater violence.

One instance of mounting Israeli pressure is the Israeli Medical Association report of “ongoing severe damage” to the healthcare system in the West Bank. Amira Hass reports in Haaretz on 6/14, that the damage is due to Israel’s withholding customs revenues from the Palestinian Authority. The funding shortfall has left the Palestinian Health Ministry unable to pay full salaries to many public-sector healthcare workers and has contributed to mounting debts, with government hospitals and clinics operating at reduced capacity. Elective and semi-urgent procedures (necessary but not immediately life-saving) have been suspended for more than a year, and some patients have suffered complications, others have died while waiting for treatment.

On June 7, five young men were snatched from their home just outside their village. Four were reportedly released after several hours of questioning, but one remains unaccounted for. A recent UN report, citing Syrian authorities, found that at least 250 Syrians have been arrested by Israel since 2024, with 50 still detained inside Israel.

“On the agenda, besides of course the option of sabotaging the election: pushing the West Bank into a third intifada. The means: intensifying pogroms in Palestinian villages (https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/editorial/2026-06-17/ty-article-opinion/israel-must-choose-life-not-the-settlements/0000019e-d212-d6a3-a5be-f77235a20000) and armed-escort trips to shrines, “counterterrorism” operations in refugee camps, and igniting Jerusalem’s Old City and Temple Mount. And, at the same time, maintaining and fanning the flames in Lebanon and Gaza. And maybe even an attack on Iran, in the spirit of the Battle of the Bulge. This man can drag us to Masada and then escape to Miami. Don’t say you weren’t warned.”

TOP OF THE NEWS: Impact of Trump’s Foreign Aid Cuts & Israel’s Law Prohibiting UNRWA in Palestine

Last Friday’s unprecedented directive from Sec. of State Rubio to pause all U.S. foreign aid, with the exception of military funding for Israel and emergency food funding for Egypt, provoked warnings from humanitarian officials that people will die as a result.

Under pressure, Sec. Rubio issued a temporary waiver on Tuesday for “life-saving humanitarian assistance … core life-saving medicine, medical services, food, shelter and subsistence assistance.” Interpreting and applying the categories of this waiver to actions on the ground has led to confusion and work stoppages.

Gaza is a case in point. Officials there said that the freeze means that not all of the 600 aid trucks specified in the ceasefire agreement will be moving into Gaza. Work to supply Gazans with hygiene kits has been suspended, along with emergency shelters, water system rehabilitation and water trucking, since water does not have a waiver. “Everything for water is suspended. Everything for shelter is suspended,” local officials told CNN. (https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/28/politics/trump-foreign-aid-cuts-impact/index.html)

There are wider ramifications for the programs delivering U.S. foreign aid in many countries. Scores of USAID contractors have been laid off or furloughed. This may lead to permanent closures due to payroll collapse, as well as failure to fulfill contracts with staff and foreign governments. Around 60 USAID senior staff have been put on paid leave, accused of actions designed to circumvent Executive Orders from the White House.

For Palestinians, the collapse of USAID is intensified by new Israeli laws, taking effect yesterday, that prohibit UNRWA activity in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, along with a prohibition on any relationship between the agency and Israeli state authorities. UNRWA is being ‘disappeared,’ along with UN refugee status for Palestinians, and thus any Right of Return.

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said this week that implementation of this law will be “disastrous.”

Sabeel Delegation in Bethlehem with Alice Kisiyah whose land in Al-Makrour is threatened by Jewish settlers. Bethlehem is surrounded by encroaching settlements. Mary Anne in back row, second from left.
Mary Anne Grady-Flores recently traveled to Palestine with an Advent delegation of Sabeel. Sabeel is a Palestinian Liberation Theology community leading internationals to witness and be present in Occupied Palestine. Mary Anne first traveled to Palestine in 2007 and has been an active member of CJP for a decade and a half. She is currently a member of the communications committee and shares her experience here:

“The first person that we met in Jerusalem was a brilliant woman, Budour Hassan, an international law expert who is blind. She co-authored the Amnesty International report, “You Feel Like You Are Subhuman” which concluded Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. She had taken direct testimony from hundreds of Gazans by phone (see interview 12/6 democracynow.org).

Going through a checkpoint, we visited the Shufat refugee camp in East Jerusalem and learned of the Israeli military repeatedly firing into schools and homes. Schoolboys who had never seen Westerners come into their camp and excitedly surrounded us. The conditions of poverty and the incredible tightness of every space in Shufat were difficult to witness. Every nook is either filled with shops or apartments. It was shocking to hear that Palestinians in Shufat pay Israel three times more in taxes than any Israeli, yet receive no services or water.

We saw the apartheid wall, surveillance towers, checkpoints, roadblocks, and Ofer prison. We met Layan Naser of Birzeit (released after 8 months in prison), Dalia Qumsieh and Alice Kisiya of Cremizan and El-Makhrour. We spoke with Doud Nasser from Tent of Nations, whose land, the last green spaces in Bethlehem, are threatened by encroaching settlements that surround them. We visited Church leaders, including Bishop Munib Younan as well as Rev. Munther Isaac, who is famous for his speech, “Christ is still in the rubble.”

We went into the holy site of the Al Aqsa Mosque and were given a tour by Aouni Bazbaz on its history. Aouni showed us bullet holes in the windows and columns, and a corner where the Israeli military killed women during prayer. We witnessed an entourage of Israelis accompanied by soldiers with guns parading through the grounds of the mosque, taunting the worshipers. The continued onslaught and Gazafication of the West Bank today is horrifying.

We felt degrees of hope. In each place we went, we heard messages of nonviolent struggle. The most profound thing was witnessing those practicing nonviolence with dignity and Sumud (steadfastness). Their faith was so strong. I was challenged by their courage, especially hearing again the Christmas message of the Angel Gabriel, “Do not be afraid!”

I feel hope, even though things look bleak. I am blown away by the faith and resolve Palestinians carry in their hearts, working tirelessly together in community supporting one another, Muslim, Christian, and Jew. The theme I kept hearing from Palestinians who came to speak with us is “We can live on this land together. We refuse to be enemies.” We, in the US, can support Palestinians by participating in the BDS movement, visiting the Holy Land, and being involved locally with CJP and other national support groups. Be sure to watch for Mary Anne’s soon-to-be-scheduled local talks and Zoom presentation.”

You are invited to visit the Holy Land through Friends of Sabeel North America www.fosna.org/delegations. For more questions, contact Mary Anne at gradyflores08@gmail.com (mailto:gradyflores08@gmail.com) .

**On Tuesday, Senate Democrats blocked a bill from being put to a vote. It would have imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). In the last week, JVP Action supporters sent over 6,000 emails to our Senators, using tools provided by JVP’s sister organization, JVP Action. JVP comments: “We can be sure a new version of this legislation is coming. Still, this victory is a strong reminder of the impact we make when we organize.”

**President Trump issued an executive order on Wednesday to combat antisemitism and fulfill campaign promises. “I will issue clear orders to my Attorney General to aggressively prosecute terroristic threats, arson, vandalism and violence against American Jews,” the White House quotes Trump as saying, adding: “To all the resident aliens who joined in the pro-jihadist protests, we put you on notice: come 2025, we will find you, and we will deport you. I will also quickly cancel the student visas of all Hamas sympathizers on college campuses which have been infested with radicalism like never before.”

**In response to Trump’s executive order (see above), Haaretz reports that pro-Israel groups are calling on WhatsApp for Jewish and Israeli students and alums to report on pro-Palestinian campus activists. Members of the U.S. branch of the right-wing Betar movement say they hope to provide the Trump administration with information leading to deportations. **The Doomsday Clock was reset to 89 seconds to midnight this week. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/) issued its assessment on Tuesday. Each year scientists are asked two questions: Is humanity safer or at greater risk this year than last year? Is humanity safer or at greater risk compared to the 78 years the clock has been ticking? Last year’s Bulletin said the war in Ukraine, nuclear escalation and climate change all contributed to the 90-seconds to midnight setting of the clock. In the year since, artificial intelligence has progressed, the Russia-Ukraine war continued, and the war in the Middle East has escalated, leading to the reset.

“As Palestinians are ruthlessly slaughtered in the name of Israel’s security, are Israelis really victims in a collective national sense? Is there not an essential distinction to be made between being Jewish and being Israeli, and thus between a long history of Jewish victimhood at the hands of antisemitic persecutors in the Christian West and the more recent Israeli suffering in the context of the anti-colonial violence that their own colonization of Palestine has provoked?”
